Buhari pegs 2017 Budget at N6.866trn

By Henry Umoru, Emman Ovuakporie, Johnbosco Agbakwuru & Joseph Erunke ABUJA—PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday,  forwarded  the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper, MTEF & FSP to the National Assembly for approval as he projected a total budget of N6,866,335,052,740 for 2017. In a letter dated Friday, September 30, 2016, personally signed by the President and addressed separately to both the Senate President,  Bukola Saraki, and House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, Buhari said with the submission of the fiscal documents, the preparation for next year’s budget was in progress. Of the N6.866 trillion proposed 2017 budget, the government would spend N1.765 trillion as capital expenditure,  N2.563 recurrent (non-debt expenditure) and N1.639 trillion for debt service, even as N350 billion had been budgeted for recurrent social intervention programme in 2017. How Jigawa Assembly Impeached Its Speaker And Elected A New One The Same Day

Jigawa State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Alhaji Idris Garba and elected Alhaji Isa Idris of Gwaram constituency as the new speaker. Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Ahmed Garba presided over the sitting attended by 23 members. Alhaji Hussaini Ali earlier announced that he received an impeachment notice signed by 25 of the 30 assembly members which he read on the floor of the House. The Deputy Speaker read the impeachment notice on the floor of the House, and confirmed the number of members that signed the notice. Garba said that 25 of the 30-member assembly that endorsed the impeachment notice showed that it met the constitutional requirement of two third to impeach any of its principal officers. “With this development, I hereby declare the seat of the Speaker vacant and a fresh election should be conducted to elect the new speaker,” he said. By Emma Amaize   WARRI —THREE civil society organizations in the Niger Delta, yesterday, disagreed with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on his recent statement that the unity of the country was not negotiable, saying his unconditional support for the unity and indivisibility of a defective federal structure that favours only a section of the country was  unacceptable. The groups, Niger Delta Security Watch Organization of Nigeria, NDSWON, Ijaw People Development Initiative, IPDI, and Foundation for Human Rights and Anti- Corruption Crusade, FHRACC, in a joint statement by their leaders, Dickson Bekederemo, Austin Ozobo and Alowei Cleric, respectively in Warri, Delta State, said: “The unity and indivisibility of Nigeria does not exist in the minds and hearts of the federating regions that constitute the country. The unity and indivisibility of Nigeria exists only in a piece of document called the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999.

International Disgrace: Yahyah Jammeh Blasts Buhari For Passing His Boundary

Gambia President Yahyah Jammeh has given his first public reaction to ECOWAS leaders’ request for him to respect the result of the 1 December polls, assuring they would attend the inauguration on 19 January. Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, and Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone are understood to have warned Mr Jammeh that if he does not step down immediately, he will face tough measures including sanctions. Addressing members of the Africa Bar Association, the president said the action of the West African leaders amounted to a violation of the ECOWAS charter itself which talks about noninterference in the internal affairs of member states. He said the regional leaders had asked him to leave the country.  “Who are they to tell me to leave my country”  he thundered. He said he made it clear to the leaders that he would not accept their proposal for him to accept the election result and warned that any attempt to enforce the result would be resisted
